‘Rust’ Armorer Convicted!

A Santa Fe, N.M., jury has convicted Hannah Gutierrez-Reed of involuntary manslaughter in the on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.

Gutierrez-Reed was the low-budget western film’s armorer and responsible for firearm safety. The film’s star and producer, Alec Baldwin, was rehearsing with a revolver on set, when it accidentally discharged. He claimed he never pulled the trigger. Hutchins died on the scene and director Joel Souza was wounded.

Gutierrez-Reed, whose attorneys will appeal the verdict,  faces up to a year and one-half in prison. More from KTLA News in Los Angeles, courtesy of 216.

Baldwin Indicted In ‘Rust’ Case

A Santa Fe, N.M., grand jury has indicted Alec Baldwin on a new involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust in 2021.

Baldwin was previously charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023, but the charge was dropped with prejudice. Hutchins died from a gunshot discharged by Baldwin at the Bonanza Creek  Ranch film set, southeast of Santa Fe. Director Joel Souza was wounded in the incident.

Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted. More from The Quartering.

(Editor’s note: Meanwhile, in a related story reported by Variety, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the set of Rust who is awaiting trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence, was offered leniency by the prosecutor if she would offer more details on how live rounds made it onto the set.

Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey said Gutierrez Reed’s cooperation would go a long way in helping her get a favorable resolution in the case, however, she added, there would be consequences if she refused.

‘Rust’ Gun Was Modified

CBS News reports that the criminal charges against Alec Baldwin in the Rust shooting were dropped because new evidence revealed the gun had been modified and prosecutors felt they could not prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Correspondent Dick Brenan said the firearm was modified and sent to the set without Baldwin’s knowledge in a way that would have made it less safe to handle. He added that the disclosure also undermined the prosecution’s contention that the gun could be fired without Baldwin pulling the trigger. Here’s more.

Alec Baldwin Charges Looming

Up to four individuals, including the actor Alec Baldwin, could face criminal charges in connection with the shooting death of cinematographer Halnya Hutchins. First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is seeking more than half a million dollars to pay the costs of investigating and prosecuting these cases.

In a letter obtained by the Los Angeles Times, the DA specified that the four individuals could face homicide charges as well as gun violations. The charges stem from the death of Hutchins on the set of Rust.

The Western was being shot just outside the city of Santa Fe when Baldwin allegedly fired a prop gun point-blank at Hutchins. Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the blast on Oct. 21, 2021. More from The Quartering.

Alec Baldwin Pulled Trigger

The Santa Fe Police Department is not ruling out criminal charges for Alec Baldwin, after a damning FBI forensics report determined he did, in fact, pull the trigger on the set of the film, Rust, that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins last year. The report has been passed on to the New Mexico District Attorney’s office for a final determination on charges. Here’s more with Don Khan Swaylo.

New Evidence In Rust Shooting

New Mexico authorities released a trove of new evidence, including hours of body-cam footage from the moments after the fatal shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Investigators also collected emails from crew members sent before the shooting, raising safety concerns. More from NBC News.

In a related development, Santa County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told NBC “Today” that no one is off the hook when it comes to criminal charges in the murder of Hutchins. “One of the key things we are waiting for is the forensics on the firearm and the munitions, and the leg print and DNA analysis from the FBI crime lab,” he said.

Alec Blames Cinematographer

Calling Alec Baldwin’s interview with ABC News “highly deceptive and nauseating,” H.A. Goodwin reports the actor-producer is blaming cinematographer Halyna Hutchins for her own death and says he feels no guilt for ending her life. The tragedy occurred on the set of the movie Rust, filmed in New Mexico. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was wounded in accident.

In the highly publicized, prime-time interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Baldwin blames Hutchins for telling him to aim the firearm in her direction. He added that he pulled the hammer back, but did not pull the trigger, setting the firearm off. “That makes no sense. That’s not really possible,” Goodman says. “And you even have to modify a firearm to even make that happen.” A riled Goodman brings us more details from the interview and his analysis.

Baldwin Shooting Was Recorded

An eyewitness on the set of the film Rust, when Alec Baldwin accidently shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, told The Sun that the tragedy was recorded on camera as the cast and crew did a take rehearsing the scene.

The insider claimed, “The camera was facing Alec, who was shooting in the camera’s general direction during a rehearsal scene that was being recorded. The cameras captured Alec shooting, but Halyna and Joel (Souza, director) were behind the camera, so I don’t think the cameras captured them being shot.” He said cameras, lights and props were damaged from the gunfire, with broken glass everywhere, so it is unclear if the footage would be salvable.

Contrary to the insider’s comments, H.A. Goodman is reporting the footage was saved on the Cloud. Goodman says the fact that the camera was destroyed is irrelevant in this day and age, since everything recorded is instantaneously sent to the Cloud or some other internet service. “The more you look into this, nothing makes sense,” Goodman says. “It’s either absolute incompetence or some kind of deliberate act, or something very bizarre.” Here’s more.

Trump Curse

Alec Baldwin just shot and killed a crew member on the set of his latest movie — accidentally.

The incident occurred in New Mexico on the Bonanza Creek Ranch outside Santa Fe, where Baldwin was appearing in a Western called Rust. Instead of a blank cartridge, he “accidentally” fired a gun filled with a real bullet that careened through the clavicle of director Joel Souza and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was standing behind Souza.

Baldwin was one of the most vocal and obnoxious of Hollywood’s Trump critics. Now we’ll see how the Liberal establishment treats this loud-mouthed douchebag, who shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a gun. More from The Salty Cracker.
