Blasting Away

Three friends — a troll, a faun and a goblin — grow tired of the Earth, and decide to venture out to explore the universe. Kenny Frankland directed this animation, illustrating a song by Justin Nation and his Caribbean friends, the rapper LogiQ Pryce and singer Drastic. Frankland created CGI figures set against live-action backdrops.

K-Pop Indies

After the breakout success of Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” we introduced you to several other slick K-Pop hit-makers. It’s time to follow up and give you a taste of Korea’s indie musicians. They might not be burning up the charts like their mainstream counterparts, but these half-dozen bands get high marks for originality, and their videos are all fun to watch as well. In no particular order, check out:

Psy Who? Here Comes Wendy

Vice visits with the diminutive Wendy Sulca,  the biggest YouTube sensation of the Spanish-speaking world. At 12 years old, the Peruvian folksinger took the internet by storm with her hit single “La Tetita” (“The Tittie”), which exceeded 4 million online hits. Written by her widowed mother Lydia Quispe, the song is an ode to breastfeeding sung in the new Andean Huayno style. At 13, she followed up with a new hit single “Cerveza, Cerveza” (Beer, Beer) and the brutally honest track “Yo Soy Pobre” (“I Am Poor”). But despite being recognizable to all young Latin American internet users, Wendy still lives in the outskirts of Lima, in a shack on the side of a hill without running water.

The Scriptures and Bikinis

Christians should not get hung up about rock’n’roll or bikinis. Chill.

At least, that’s the advice of Christian political activist Alfonzo Rachel, who explains that he has encountered some resistance from fellow believers upset over a new video by his band 20 lb. Sledge, featuring women in two-piece bathing suits, dancing, a pool party and — heaven forbid — the imbibing of ginger ale. H/T PJTV

It’s Raining Men

We often feature hot babes — whether movie stars or burlesque queens — in steamy dances. It’s about time we offered something for the ladies. Turnabout is fair play. H/T Blazing Cat Fur

Last Mask

Romanian animator Anton Octavian creates surreal graphics for music videos,  in this case, “Last Mask” by a modern jazz, techno-oriented band called Brainkiller. It’s a truly international effort. The three-member band includes keyboardist Jacob Koller from Arizona, trombone player Brian Allen from Texas and drummer Hernan Hecht from Mexico City.  Their music is distributed through Rare Noise Records, based in the United Kingdom.
