Sex in the Arab World

“If you really want to know people, start by looking in their bedrooms,” says Shereen El Feki, author of the new book Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World.

El Feki, who was raised in Canada and is a practicing Muslim, is the former vice chair of the U.N.’s Global Commission on HIV and Law. Born to an Egyptian father and Welsh mother, she was motivated by 9/11 to seek a better understanding of her Arab and Islamic heritage.

El Feki found that demonstrators for political freedom in Tahrir Square during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution had little interest in also promoting sexual freedom. That’s because most Arabs derive their sexual mores from their religious beliefs. The only way to bring more sexual freedom to the Arab world, she argues, is through Islam, which was far more tolerant of the needs of the flesh a thousand years ago than it is today. H/T Reason TV

Topless Jihad Launched

Amina Tyler, a Tunisian activist, has inspired the Ukrainian feminist group, FEMEN, to jump-start a new Arab Spring for women’s rights. Tyler caused controversy after posting photos of feminist slogans written across her naked chest, hoping to raise awareness of the deteriorating situation of women’s rights in the Middle East. A Muslim preacher demanded the teenager be stoned, calling her an “epidemic.” Because of Tyler’s demonstration, FEMEN has declared April 4 a day of “relentless topless jihad against Islamism.”

Banning Bikini Baristas

They make it their business to mind your business, and this month America’s busybodies have been working overtime.

Lawmakers are no longer loco for just one brand of energy drink. Illinois State Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) has penned a bill that would make it illegal “to sell, offer for sale or deliver” just about any kind of energy drink to anyone under age 18 (Arroyo’s championing another top-tier issue–outlawing lion steaks).

Meanwhile, dog lovers in Oklahoma are sounding off against a plan cooked up by State Sen. Patrick Anderson (R-Enid) to allow cities to ban specific breeds of dogs. But this time the Nanny of the Month comes to us from Shelton, Washington, where city commissioners and townspeople alike have united against a threat of bikini baristas. Sex and Punishment

“Our sex organs were kind of like hands or feet, they were obedient,” says Eric Berkowitz, author of Sex and Punishment: Four Thousand Years of Judging Desire. “After we ate the apple and did what we did, the sex organs to Augustine became like little dictators that we have to either succumb to or overpower.”

ReasonTV‘s Tracy Oppenheimer sat down with Berkowitz to discuss original sin, changing trends in sex laws and why governments feel duty-bound to control what their citizens do in the bedroom.

Combat Etiquette for Women

Now that the US military is on board with the concept of sending women into battle, wonder if the Brass plan to create an infomercial showing women soldiers the proper grooming and etiquette to employ on the frontlines? They’ve gone that route before. Just take a look at The Pleasure of Your Company: Military Etiquette and Grooming, produced by the military as a teaching tool in 1970.  Here, the young lady soldier could learn everything she needed to know about the proper selection of clothes, table manners, ordering in a restaurant, introductions, dating etiquette and etiquette at a formal reception.
