Empty space in US regional shopping malls has hit a new six-year high. The malls have been hit by massive store closures, driven by more customer shopping online. The Money GPS covers the changing retail dynamics, and wonders: “Can you guess the only company opening stores?” Actually, it’s not the only company but has opened nine times more stores than anyone else.
Give up? It’s Dollar General, with 900 openings, far exceeding the 90 stores opened apiece by the GAP and Walmart.

Walmart has banned Cosmopolitan on grounds that the glamour magazine is sexist. We also find Cosmopolitan pretty worthless but the sexism charge is strange, seeing as how this women’s magazine has pretty much been the same worthless rag for many years now. A woman has filed a lawsuit against Walmart because haircare products she uses are kept in locked display cases. Of course, the products in question are also among those that are frequently stolen, along with other products kept under lock and key, like bullets, BBs and shotgun shells. This is one of the best takedowns ever of Robert Greenwald, the lockstep propagandist masquerading as a documentary filmmaker, who created Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price, among other works. Greenwald assails Walmart for opposing unions, but as Penn & Teller note, he’s never used union crews on his low-budget, agitprop movies. It brings to mind what William F. UPDATE: A nationwide boycott against Walmart fizzled out today. Shoppers came out in droves, and as few as 50 Walmart employees — out of a workforce of 1.3 million — staged walkouts. A union-backed group, Our Walmart, was leading the fight and garnered plenty of media coverage, but apparently its support was all Astro-Turf.
