Baldwin Indicted In ‘Rust’ Case

A Santa Fe, N.M., grand jury has indicted Alec Baldwin on a new involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust in 2021.

Baldwin was previously charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023, but the charge was dropped with prejudice. Hutchins died from a gunshot discharged by Baldwin at the Bonanza Creek  Ranch film set, southeast of Santa Fe. Director Joel Souza was wounded in the incident.

Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted. More from The Quartering.

(Editor’s note: Meanwhile, in a related story reported by Variety, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer on the set of Rust who is awaiting trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence, was offered leniency by the prosecutor if she would offer more details on how live rounds made it onto the set.

Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey said Gutierrez Reed’s cooperation would go a long way in helping her get a favorable resolution in the case, however, she added, there would be consequences if she refused.

Baldwin Could Still Be Charged

Fox News reports that manslaughter charges are back on the table for Alec Baldwin in the fatal shooting on the set of the Rust film last year, south of Santa, Fe, N.M.

Martha MacCallum reports that a new expert forensic analysis determined the trigger had to be pulled for the prop Colt 45 revolver to be discharged. Prosecutors dropped involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin in April, citing the need for more investigation and forensic analysis.  Baldwin has adamantly denied pulling the trigger in the incident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Martha MacCallum is joined by weapons safety expert Steve Wolfe to dissect the new report.

‘Rust’ Gun Was Modified

CBS News reports that the criminal charges against Alec Baldwin in the Rust shooting were dropped because new evidence revealed the gun had been modified and prosecutors felt they could not prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Correspondent Dick Brenan said the firearm was modified and sent to the set without Baldwin’s knowledge in a way that would have made it less safe to handle. He added that the disclosure also undermined the prosecution’s contention that the gun could be fired without Baldwin pulling the trigger. Here’s more.

Alec Baldwin Walks Away

Manslaughter charges have been dropped against actor Alec Baldwin in the death of his cinematographer on the movie set of Rust.

Baldwin, 65, was charged with involuntary manslaughter over the Oct. 21, 2021 shooting of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the New Mexico set of the Western movie. The death occurred after a prop pistol Baldwin was using for a scene unexpectedly fired a real bullet.

Filming for the movie is due to resume in Montana this week. Here’s more from ABC News.

Baldwin Gets Trump Treatment

H.A. Goodman suggests that Alec Baldwin is getting the Donald J. Trump treatment! Apparently, there’s a Republican prosecutor in charge of the New Mexico fatal shooting case on the set of the film Rust, whom the Baldwin legal team desperately wants to disqualify.

“Where have we seen that before,” Goodman says. “Every Democrat in the known universe has tried to prosecute Trump.” Goodman says Baldwin will almost certainly face prison time, because he accidently ended someone’s life and was categorically irresponsible and negligent in his actions. DA Charges Alec Baldwin!

Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Alwies has charged Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed with two counts each of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. Assistant director David Halls agreed to plea to negligent use of a deadly weapon.

ABC News’ Dan Abrams reports that the maximum sentence for involuntary manslaughter in New Mexico is 18 months, although the DA’s office added firearm enhancement to one of the charges, which would extend the sentence by a mandatory five years. The DA’s office said, “The evidence clearly shows a pattern of criminal disregard for safety on the Rust film set. In New Mexico, there’s no room for film sets that don’t take our commitment to gun safety and public safety seriously.” Here’s more from ABC News.

The legal team from the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), featuring former President Trump counsel Jay Sekulow, brings more in-depth analysis of the charges.

Baldwin’s Fate In DA’s Hands

Sourcing TMZ, Goodman says DA Mary Carmack-Altwies has requested additional funding from the state, suggesting that Baldwin will be charged and the case will move forward. More with Goodman.

Baldwin Settles, Film Resumes

In an insane turn of events, Ryan Kinel reports that Alec Baldwin has reached a settlement with the widower of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the film will resume filming in January. Even more bizarre, Hutchins’ widow Matthew Hutchins was named executive producer of the film.

The Santa Fe District Attorney’s office announced that criminal charges are still pending for Baldwin in spite of the settlement. Baldwin alleges the shooting death of Halyna Hutchins last summer was an accident and contends he did not pull the trigger. More with Kinel on RK Outpost.

Alec Baldwin Charges Looming

Up to four individuals, including the actor Alec Baldwin, could face criminal charges in connection with the shooting death of cinematographer Halnya Hutchins. First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is seeking more than half a million dollars to pay the costs of investigating and prosecuting these cases.

In a letter obtained by the Los Angeles Times, the DA specified that the four individuals could face homicide charges as well as gun violations. The charges stem from the death of Hutchins on the set of Rust.

The Western was being shot just outside the city of Santa Fe when Baldwin allegedly fired a prop gun point-blank at Hutchins. Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the blast on Oct. 21, 2021. More from The Quartering.
