Obama Against Entrepreneurs

Have you heard the latest mind-blowing statistic about the Obama economy? There are now more Americans getting “food assistance” checks (101 million of them) than people working in the private sector (97 million). Who’s going to pay those bills, Mr. Obama?

Specialization and Trade

Professor Art Carden, from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., is able to mow his lawn, build a fence, and install a faucet all at one time. How? He does it by employing others to do this work for him. He uses the money he earns doing what he does best and hires people to do this work for him because that is what they specialize in doing. This is an example of specialization through trade. H/T Learn Liberty

Capitalism and Imperialism

Although many conflate capitalism and imperialism or think the two systems are closely connected, they are actually quite different, even at odds with one another. Capitalism is a system based on voluntary exchanges that benefit all of the parties involved. In contrast, imperialism is based on exploiting the poor through political power and military force.

Prof. Stephen Davies shows that capitalism has been blamed through the years for a number of catastrophes—such as political corruption, exploitation of the poor, mass famines and others—that were, in fact, a result of imperialism. H/T Learn Liberty

What’s Right with Social Justice

Do free market advocates care about the plight of the poor? In this video, Professor Matt Zwolinski from the University of San Diego argues that both free market advocates and social justice proponents can agree that the rules of a just society should work for the maximum advantage of its poorest members. They differ, however, mainly on HOW to achieve the best results for the poor.

A World Without Capitalism

Lots of leftists these days are down on capitalism, but how many of these pampered protesters have really thought through their positions? Step into an alternate reality where capitalism doesn’t exist, and everyone’s free to scrounge for government handouts of coffee and gruel, and to dodge the riot police. This mix of It’s A Wonderful Life and Groundhog Day was created by the Fund for American Studies. H/T IMAO

Free Market Revolution

SALUTE TO AYN RAND

Did Ayn Rand provide a path to economic prosperity? Yaron Brook, author of Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand’s Ideas Can End Big Government and executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute, believes so, and tells Bill Whittle why in a special PJTV interview. Among the many topics Brook covers: the housing crisis, government spending and the roots of the current economic stagnation.

Freedom’s Forge

Dick Morris travels back in time to World War II and traces how the United States built the world’s most formidable military-industrial machine within a span of a few years. With the encouragement of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the miraculous feat was accomplished by a capitalist czar handpicked from the automotive industry, William Signius Knudsen, who applied free market principles to spur increased production.

Morris cites a book called Freedom’s Forge by Arthur Herman that analyzes how the Danish-born Knudsen could so quickly achieve such a dramatic turnaround. Now, if only today’s Democrats could remember their own party’s past triumphs, instead of smearing those entrepreneurs trying to build businesses in the current, tough economic climate. Ayn Rand Vs. Big Government

“The government is the biggest violator of our rights today.” That’s the word from Yaron Brook, co-author of Free Market Revolution and president of the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights.

At FreedomFest 2012, Reason.TV’s Matt Welch sat down with Brook to discuss why big government hurts the poor and how Ayn Rand inspired the Tea Party. Rand is as popular today as ever, Brook says, noting that 1.5 million copies of her novel Atlas Shrugged have sold since President Barack Obama’s election in 2008.
