Another Insane Day in Ukraine

Tempers boiled over for a second day in Ukraine’s parliament as pro-government and opposition deputies clashed over a move to reinstate a controversial prime minister. While waves of deputies wrestled or exchanged fisticuffs, others climbed atop tables to shout down their detractors.

Conspicuously absent from the melee: World boxing champion Vitali Klitschko and leader of the UDAR reform party.  He reported for duty as usual at the parliament, but calmly watched the skirmishes from the sidelines. Explaining his rationale for not getting embroiled in the fight, he said, “You could call the fists of a world champion a nuclear weapon. I don’t think we will use this weapon yet.”

Maybe we should entice Klitschko to Washington, D.C. to knock some sense into our own political leaders, who seem hellbent on pushing us off the Fiscal Cliff. If he can appear cool and collected amid the chaos in Ukraine, we sincerely doubt Nancy Pelosi is going to rustle his jimmies. More from On Demand News.

The Barbies Are Coming

Valeria Lukyanova, the real-life Barbie from Ukraine, now has a twin, Olga “Dominica” Oleynik, who tries to mirror Lukyanova’s cosmetically enhanced appearance in every way. What’s more, the two women have announced plans to leave their homeland and move to the good old USA. Wonder how many men are weighing whether to legally change their first and last names to simply “Ken.” H/T Next Media Animation

Sappho, Venus of Lesbos

Today’s Trillion $ Movie — Sappho, Venus of Lesbos — stars Ginger from Gilligan’s Island (Tina Louise) along with scores of scantily clad women. Now, if that’s not enough enticement to watch the movie, you’ve got ice water coursing through your veins, not blood.

Inexplicably released in the United States as The Warrior Empress, this 1960 Italian import was one of 300 sword and sandal epics rushed into production in a three-year span following the success of Hercules, with Steve Reeves. Sappho, Venus of Lesbos doesn’t boast any Hercules wannabes, let alone bare-chested men. But Kerwin Mathews, fresh from playing the lead in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad,  resurfaces as an earnest and energetic hero, the type usually aided by Hercules. In the absence of same, Mathews’ Phaon relies for help instead from Louise’s Sappho, billed in the film’s tagline as “the world’s boldest beauty.” She doesn’t bear much resemblance to the historic poetess of yore, but who watches peplum classics for their intellectual content?

Warming up for Gilligan’s Island, she lives in an “island” along a seacoast, cut off from the mainland by a moat. Inside this protected enclave lives a sorority of fetching vestal virgins who parade around in sheer nightgowns. Again, little of this is historically accurate, but who cares?  Phaon literally falls into this compound, and falls in love with Sappho, pitting him in a grudge match against Hyperbius (an excellent Riccardo Garrone), the man to whom she is pledged.

Otherwise, this epic touches all of the expected bases. It’s got snarling lions, dueling chariots, an uprising against a greedy king, skullduggery at sea, and enough swordplay to fill an entire Star Wars trilogy. The lush musical score by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino adds grace notes. Enjoy, and do return again next Friday for another Trillion $ Movie.

Go! Girl! Go! — Cuarenta y Tres

Cecille B. DeMille made a career out of producing and directing Biblical epics that upheld Christian values while also straddling the borderline by presenting pagan excesses in as flagrant a way as the censors would permit. Witness “The Dance of the Naked Moon” scene from his 1932, Pre-Code Sign of the Cross.

College Costs Skyrocketing

It’s no secret that U.S. college tuition costs are rising dramatically, and the high cost of a college education burdens young people and their families. How can we make college more affordable?

Many suggest that the best way to keep tuition affordable is by increasing government assistance through student loans, grants and tax credits for education. American University Professor Daniel Lin shows that doing so will actually lead to higher college costs, because loans/grants/tax credits are directly related to the increasing cost of education.

Before we can find any solution, it is important to understand the root cause of the rising prices. Lin finds that increased demand—fueled by improved job prospects for graduates and increased government assistance—is to blame for soaring tuition prices. H/T LearnLiberty

Hollywood Disinformation

Hollywood is overrun by Leftists, but few as brazen or bombastic as Oliver Stone, whose latest anti-American screed is a propaganda-laden series called Oliver Stone’s Secret History of America, airing on Showtime. On this week’s Poliwood, Roger L. Simon and Lionel Chetwynd speak with historian and Pajamas Media Columnist Ron Radosh to discuss the series’ shoddy dishonesty and twisting of historical fact.  Find out why they think this series will misinform an entire generation of Americans.
