RUBY JOULE

Deep in the heart of Texas, Austin’s Ruby Joule reigns as a porcelain queen of burlesque. Her finely etched tagline: “The gem you’d like to polish.” Joule is a co-founder and headliner for the Jigglewatts Burlesque troupe, known for her graceful and glamorous stage presence. A native of Austin, she’s a classically trained ballet dancer and also studied traditional Polynesian dance before perfecting her cabaret act.

She lives up to her billing as “a silky debutante with a talent for scandal” with this sultry 2011 performance at Bustout Burlesque in New Orleans.

Egypt Turning to the Dark Side

Egyptian poet Abd Al-Rahmin Al-Abnoudi expresses horror that both Egypt and Tunisia are becoming like Afghanistan, falling under the grip of fanatics who rule through suppression and the not-so-veiled threat of assassinations. It’s now official: The Arab Spring didn’t produce a wave of freedom. It just toppled a few long-standing despots, allowing a new set of thugs to seize power.

City Paradise

A Japanese transplant to London has an unflattering view of her new environment, until she takes a deeper plunge and begins to see the beauty hidden by the grime and dreary weather.  This work by Gaelle Denis won the BAFTA, Britain’s equivalent of an Oscar, for best short animation in 2005. The music by Joanna Newsom fits perfectly with the surreal animation. Yes, it is strange, and undoubtedly an art film, but a lot of fun, and does leave a lingering impression.

ROXY DIAMOND

Raised in Switzerland and now based in Berlin, Roxy Diamond embarked on a career in burlesque after coming to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which counts Grace Kelly and Katharine Hepburn among its alumni. Her performances are often filled with movie references. She has an original act “Bates Motel” that pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and another show, “Eyes Wide Shut,” inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s kinky thriller. Even so, Roxy is perhaps most celebrated for her Champagne Glass acts. She takes a dip here at the International Burlesque Circus in Utrecht, Netherlands.
