Is The UN Fair To Israel?

In the last few decades ,the United Nations has been obsessed with one country. Is it North Korea, Zimbabwe, Iran, Syria, China or some other nation with a reprehensible human rights record? Those would all be fair guesses and they would all be wrong. Anne Bayefsky, director of the Touro Human Rights Institute, answers this riddle and explains the upside-down moral universe in which the United Nations resides. H/T Prager University

Babes of Burlesque: 55

SCARLETT JAMES

This blonde bombshell from Montreal turns the spotlight on the glamour of burlesque. Her feathered and bejeweled costumes are exquisite to behold, but, of course, she looks even more radiant after she’s taken them off. She’s enamored with vintage burlesque and enjoys creating grandiose, spectacular shows. Little wonder she’s in hot demand around the world, from Shanghai to Paris, from Berlin to Chicago.

Here she is wowing and working up the crowd at the Windy City Burlesque Fest in 2010. For such a demure damsel, she sure slides and glides with ease, quickly transforming into a dynamo.

Who Owns Your Phone?

“Who owns your phone at the end of the day?” asks Derek Khanna, a visiting fellow at Yale Law and former staff member at the Republican Study Committee. Last fall, Khanna earned notoriety – and a pink slip – for a public memo urging GOP members of Congress to rethink their stance on copyright law.

More recently, in a column for The Atlantic, Khanna blasted a new ruling that criminalizes the unlocking of cellphones under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). Unlocking the phone simply means that a person could use a phone designed for one carrier on another carrier, assuming they had switched his plan. In addition to civil penalties, breaking this law could land you in prison for up to five years and force you to pay a fine of up to $500,000.

“In 1998 a poorly written statute, the DMCA, was passed and it prohibited a wide swath of commonly used technology in the name of defending copyright,” Khanna explains. “If this is allowed to stand, then the answer is you don’t own your phone.” H/T Reason.TV

Laboratories of Democracy

John Stossel explains the beauty of federalism. If you live in a state where the politicians are power-crazy, running amok, bankrupting the government and taxing the citizenry to the hilt, all you have to do is pack your bags and head somewhere else where the pastures are greener. He identifies the handful of states that don’t collect an income tax.

The Drunken Birds of Spring

As spring approaches, we anticipate the fluttering butterflies and the capering baby lambs, but we can also expect to see some birds hammered out of their minds in the trees, and perhaps rolling on the ground. In most cases, says Hank Green, these birds have overindulged in the fermented berries and other fruits that froze during the winter and are now thawing – proving an irresistible treat for many kinds of birds. Pakistan’s Shameful Killings

They’re called “honor” killings, but there’s nothing honorable about the brutal, point-blank murder of women and children condoned in Pakistan and other predominantly Muslim countries. Jonathan Rugman, foreign affairs correspondent for Channel 4 in Great Britain, reports on one such case. Warning: The content is both shocking and disturbing.

Animated History of Poland

Produced for the Polish Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, this amazing animation captures the history of Poland in eight, action-packed minutes.  You might not be familiar enough with Polish history to grasp the significance of all of the events depicted, or totally follow the chronology,  but check it out anyway. The animation is quite strong, and provides a solid peg to learn more about Poland. H/T Kuriositas
