Justice on Trial in Italy

The gruesome murder of British exchange student Meredith Kercher shocked the world but has justice been served or has the notorious Italian justice system locked up the wrong person?

“The truth is elusive,” Barbie Nadeau, a Newsweek writer says. “We have no idea whether she’s guilty…we actually don’t know.” Nadeau is one of the Knox supporters who suggest that her  trial was anything but fair. Knox is now appealing her conviction and the prosecution’s case is looking shaky.

Banning Bikini Baristas

They make it their business to mind your business, and this month America’s busybodies have been working overtime.

Lawmakers are no longer loco for just one brand of energy drink. Illinois State Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) has penned a bill that would make it illegal “to sell, offer for sale or deliver” just about any kind of energy drink to anyone under age 18 (Arroyo’s championing another top-tier issue–outlawing lion steaks).

Meanwhile, dog lovers in Oklahoma are sounding off against a plan cooked up by State Sen. Patrick Anderson (R-Enid) to allow cities to ban specific breeds of dogs. But this time the Nanny of the Month comes to us from Shelton, Washington, where city commissioners and townspeople alike have united against a threat of bikini baristas. Dishes and Membranes

In this edition of Bite Sci-zed, Alex Dainis explains how humble dish detergent relates to every one of your cells.

Get Ready for Bank Runs

Bank runs and economic collapse have become commonplace in Europe, never mind the rosy words of politicians that the worst of the recession was over. Pundit Wayne Allyn Root of Personal Liberty Digest says those of us in North America shouldn’t gloat. What’s happening across Europe, he says, is a bellwether for what’s likely to follow in the United States, given the bloated spending and punitive, regulatory policies of the Obama Administration.

The Love Park

Across the Americas and Europe, people often go online or check the newspapers to search the personals and seek out romance. But in China, personals get posted in public parks. Would-be suitors and their parents cruise locales like the People’s Park in Shanghai seeking the right partners for themselves or for their children.

Jasper in a Jam

A young boy trapped inside a pawnshop at night gets a fright when the musical instruments spring to life. This 1946 short is one of the more animated cartoons from George Pal’s Puppetoons series, featuring hot jazz from Peggy Lee and the Charlie Barnet Orchestra. Too bad it’s rarely shown nowadays as folks walk around on eggshells trying to be politically correct. Some of the racial stereotyping is indeed silly and dated, but it’s a product of its era and shouldn’t be judged through the prism of today’s more rigid standards.

Know Your Monster: 29

VIRAS

A gigantic squid-like creature from Outer Space, Viras battles Gamera in the 1968 film Destroy All Planets, also known as Gamera Vs. the Space Monster Viras. It’s the one and only screen appearance by Viras, barring fleeting glimpses of him seen in stock footage shown during other Gamera movies.

Viras is the leader of an alien race intent on conquering the Earth. He sees Gamera as the only threat to stop his plans, so he targets the flying turtle, preying upon Gamera’s one weakness — a kindness and affinity toward children. Viras kidnaps two Boy Scouts and holds them hostage on his spaceship. With Gamera coming to their rescue, Viras can employ his arsenal of tricks, including telepathy and mind control, to defeat the Earth monster. Otherwise, Viras has a limited arsenal of weapons. He doesn’t spit fire or hurl radioactive beams. He can only smother opponents with his tentacles or spear them with sharply pointed head.

We already presented the theatrical trailer for Gamera Vs. the Space Monster Viras in our Know Your Monster installment on Gamera. So, instead of repeating the trailer, here’s a well-done review of the movie — well-done, with one exception. The reviewer slips out of the gate and calls the monster “Varan” instead of “Viras.” Oh, well, nobody’s perfect. And he does catch and correct the mistake moving forward.

Hackers Running Amok Again

Previous generations dealt with the scourge of pirates on the open seas. Our curse involves coping with the various rogues, ranging from the Anonymous hackers to everyday garden-variety spammers, trolling the electronic waters of the Web. If you’ve encountered delays and service interruptions going online this week, the cause might be traced to what authorities are calling the most massive cyber attack in the history of the Internet.

Lincoln’s Civil War Quandary

Pundit Dick Morris journeys back in time to examine the political strategy used by President Abraham Lincoln to keep the Union intact during the Civil War. Everything hinged on whether Lincoln could persuade the Border States, notably Delaware, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Missouri, from joining the secessionist South.
