Media Accused of Coverup

As news leaks about the US drone base in Saudi Arabia, now we’re learning that three American media outlets — The New York Times, Washington Post and Associated Press — have long known about the base, but withheld information from the public at the request of the Obama Administration. If Nixon had asked these same outlets to suppress the news, do you think they would have complied? Why is it they only hop into bed with so-called progressives like Obama?

News Parasites or Prophets?

How has Mediaite, a popular news and opinion blog that covers politics and entertainment in the media industry, found a large and loyal audience in an era of dwindling demand for the mainstream press? Mediaite editors Andrew Kirell and Noah Rothman point to their website’s willingness to challenge bedrock notions of what journalism is supposed to be. For instance, where legacy media still pushes an increasingly unbelievable belief in its reporters’ “objectivity,” the Mediaite staff is open about their ideological leanings.

Reason‘s Kennedy sat down with Kirell and Rothman to discuss the rise of Mediaite, their embrace of “parasitic” journalism, and whether their personal politics make them better reporters.

Egypt Silencing Free Speech

The Egyptian regime of Mohammed Morsi has stepped up attacks on journalists, charging them with insulting his leadership. In fact, a new human rights report shows that Morsi has brought four times more legal cases against journalists and media figures than the regime of the deposed Hosni Mubarak. So much for the myth of the Arab Spring translating into a burst of freedom.

Al Jazeera Coming to America

It’s official: Al Gore’s bumbling, laughably low-rated Current TV network will now become an arm of Arab propagandists. Qatari-owned news network Al Jazeera has finalized a deal to buy the American liberal cable channel and transform it into Al Jazeera America. Now that Al Gore has become Al “Jazeera” Gore, how long before MSNBC sells out to the Russians?

Weasel Words Shape Politics

Not only politicians, but also the media, often use euphemisms to soften the truth and camouflage hard realities. Civilians killed in wars are called “collateral damage.” No one’s rich or poor, anymore. Soldiers don’t suffer shellshock, but post-traumatic stress disorder.

This report from RT Anerica, Russian TV, examines the bureaucratic  “newspeak,” invoking George Carlin in the process. Of course, Russian politicians and media are just as adept as their American counterparts in lying to the public.
