Egypt Wants Pardon for Sheik

Egypt’s new President Mohammed Morsi has now made official what has been rumored for many months: He will ask President Obama to pardon the blind Egyptian Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, who is serving a life sentence in the United States for the 1993 World Trade Center attack.

Morsi can ask, but Obama would be wise to deny the request. The 1993 bombings orchestrated by The Blind Sheik and his nine co-conspirators served as the warmup act for the most heinous terrorist assault ever mounted on American soil. If Obama grants this pardon, he might as well erect a billboard at Ellis Island inviting every last murdering low-life around the world free access to prey on Americans.

It also would be insincerity of the highest order if Obama denies the pardon, but agrees to transfer The Blind Sheik into Egyptian custody on “humanitarian grounds.” The Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya terrorist might be old, 74, and blind, but neither negates the severity of his sedition.

Obama’s Broad Spy Powers

After a perfunctory, last-minute debate, the Senate has reauthorized a law allowing for sweeping federal spying powers, including warrantless surveillance on domestic communications. Amendments that would have offered a small degree of oversight were pushed aside. Defenders claimed that they simply didn’t have time to properly consider alternatives, but that’s mainly because they didn’t schedule a debate until mere hours remained before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act amendments were set to expire.

Cato Institute research fellow Julian Sanchez examines the alternatives.

Wonderful World of Color

Is there any factory more colorful and surreal than Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory? How about the DayGlo Color Corp. factory in Cleveland?

That’s where workers grind out the bright, fluorescent pigments used in traffic cones, Hula hoops and black light posters. Bytesize Science goes inside the plant, opened in the 1950s by inventors Bob and Joe Switzer to capitalize on a unique pigment production process they had developed.

Kennedy Myths and Legends

Was Joseph P. Kennedy, the father of JFK, RFK and Teddy Kennedy, a bootlegger? Was he anti-Semitic or a Nazi sympathizer? How did he make his millions? David Nasaw examines the legends and exposes the many myths surrounding the Kennedy patriarch. Nasaw is a professor of history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and also the author of the best-selling biography The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy.

To the disappointment of Kennedy haters everywhere, Nasaw debunks the myth that Joe made a fortune via bootlegging during Prohibition. In fact, those stories about Kennedy Sr., who passed multiple security checks by the FBI while serving multiple presidents, only surfaced in the late ’60s when JFK assassination buffs tried to tie the family to the mob.

Nasaw discusses his book with Nick Gillespie from Reason TV.

Brazil’s Prostitutes Get Schooled

Brazilian prostitutes are hitting the classrooms to bone up on English in preparation for an expected influx of tourists coming for the World Cup and the Olympics. That begs the question: Will tourists trolling the hotspots of Rio seek out the most endowed Brazilian prostitutes or the most cunning linguists?

What Happened to Baz

An Australian cane toad named Daz ponders the fate of his missing buddy Baz because “pickle me grandma, the silly old bugger has gone bloody missing.” Has Baz been struck down by a freak sporting accident? Has he become lost and disoriented? What if he encountered the cane toad’s nemesis, Victa, a vicious lawn mower?

David Clayton and Andrew Silke collaborated on this 2002 short, which carries the full title Cane Toad: What Happened to Baz? It’s quite funny, with splatting and side-splitting commentary on the invasive cane toads, an introduced species that has overrun Australia with a vengeance.

Drugs Swelling Inmate Ranks

Fully 24 percent of inmates in U.S. prisons are nonviolent drug offenders. The drug war has been adding to a growing U.S. prison population for the past 40 years. Today, the United States holds more human beings in prisons than any other country, both as a percentage of the population and in counting total numbers.

Loyola University Prof. Daniel D’Amico shows how the war on drugs has led to significant increases in the U.S. prison population and argues that perhaps this is an ineffective way to address drug use in America. The United States is spending billions of dollars and locking up hundreds of thousands of people. Might there be a better alternative? More from Learn Liberty.
