Myanmar

Now that Myanmar has opened its doors to tourists, we are beginning to see some intoxicating travelogues taking in the sights in the southeast Asian country, formerly known as Burma. Here’s one of the better introductions to Myanmar, from Patrik Wallner with Visualtraveling. The colors, the culture, the countryside are all reminiscent of neighboring Thailand, but everything looks less developed and commercialized. The visuals here are strong, and so is the accompanying music by Jean-Claude Vannier. H/T Kuriositas

Why Women Wear Heels

High heels are uncomfortable and unpractical, so why do women wear them?

A new study reveals that the way high heels make a woman walk has an effect on the way she moves. That shift in movement makes other people perceive the wearer as more feminine and attractive.

Babes of Burlesque: 6

BEATRIX VON BOURBON

Last spring, when Beatrix Von Bourbon advanced to the live semi-finals of the TV show Britain’s Got Talent, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell called her “a British version of Dita Von Teese.” The London native’s audition generated plenty of controversy and front-page headlines, but the show’s producers allowed her to remain in the contest, and eight million viewers watched her final performance. She combines a warm, friendly and charismatic personality with her heavily tattooed appearance and risqué performance style.  Here’s her sultry Sex Spider act.

By contrast, she gives a more classic and comic performance at the Fish & Whips Burlesque Contest.

How Can We Preserve Freedom

Magician/atheist Penn Jillette and conservative talk show host Glenn Beck might make for strange bedfellows, but the two are longtime friends and actually agree on many issues. Central to their beliefs: We need more freedom in this country, not less. We need a more limited government grounded on the Constitution, not a government that’s forever growing, amassing power and moving us toward becoming a more totalitarian society.

Wikipedia’s Wimbledon Champ

This just in. The founder of Wikipedia is demanding that a Wikipedia page about himself be edited because of false information. “According to Wikipedia, its founder is a 10-time Wimbledon champion who is an astronaut in his spare time,” says Jodi Miller. She also touches on Sean Penn’s man-crush on Hugo Chavez, the inflated cost of a penny and school condom machines in this edition of NewsBusted.

Rule of Lawlessness

Are we a nation ruled by laws, or has our government been taken over by a group of modern-day marquis and baronettes who simply pretend to govern, while robbing us blind? On this week’s Afterburner, Bill Whittle likens the recent “fiscal cliff” crisis to kabuki theater. So how can one person come out on top in such a system? Find out. H/T PJTV

Mali Islamists Seize Hostages

Three Algerian diplomats held hostage by suspected Islamist militants in Mali have appealed to their government to secure their release. The three men are among seven diplomats seized in April while working at the Algerian consulate in Gao in northern Mali. Gao is part of a swath of territory in northern Mali now under the control of Tuareg-led separatists.

The American Dream

Tad Lumpkin uses animation to explain the collapse of the American dream. Borrowing from an eclectic mix of sources — from A Christmas Carol to Back to the Future and Gladiators — Lumpkin pins our stagnant economy on lax monetary policy, overspending by the US government and, most of all, the predatory excesses of the centralized Federal Reserve Bank. Some of the hints of conspiracy are a bit much, as in the suggestion that it was bankers, not mobsters or Communists, who likely assassinated JFK. These instances of hyperbole aside, the 2011 film is still quite good as a primer on how our banking system works and how it’s subject to manipulation.

Call Me Stormy Cops Award

We’re pleased to announce Call Me Stormy has been named one of the best new blogs in the 2nd Annual Zilla Awards for Awesomeness in the Dextrosphere. We’re one of five new blogs singled out for the honor — the others being Blur Brain, Liberty Unyielding, ConMom and Batshit Crazy News.

Zilla of the Resistance heads the elite awards jury panel. Explaining the rationale behind them, she writes, “Conservative Bloggers may still be the Chopped Liver of the Right, but in my eyes they are the finest cuts of the very best red meat, and now it is time to again recognize the bestiest of that best. This time around there are some winners on a hot streak, some new winners, and some new categories, because there is a lot of awesomeness on the RIGHT side of the Blogosphere that deserves a fiery flaming badge of honor.”

We’re honored by this recognition and crazy enough to keep playing with fire. Thanks Zilla and friends.
