Shibuya: Tokyo’s Lockdown

Black Pigeon Speaks takes us to the Shibuya district in Tokyo. This is a gritty shopping and commercial district that straddles two of Tokyo’s busiest railroad hubs — the Shibuya Station and the Shinjuku Station. This is a district of great popularity with young people. Here can be found several famous fashion stores as well as Japan’s Internet technology firms. But there are also small walking streets where there are old-school pubs that can only accommodate a few people in tight quarters. This is a walk-though tour.

Tokyo’s Strange Lockdown

MISS CABARETTA

When we think of Japan, we think of sushi and sumo wrestlers. But Miss Cabaretta — real name Deka Tamagi — has also made burlesque part of the social fabric in Japan. Known for her exotic costumes and showy, high-stepping dances, she’s a fan of vintage burlesque. To quote the Taipei Times, “The voluptuous beauty’s act takes cues from burlesque performers of the 1950s and 1960s. Swaying and swirling gracefully across the stage, she caresses herself and her wavy black hair before slowly taking off pieces of her tasseled and bejeweled costumes.”

Here she’s ready to blast off in a military-themed dance at the Amaranth Lounge in Tokyo.

She cites eclectic musical influences, from contemporary rock to classic Cuban jazz. In this performance at Tokyo’s Liquid Loft, she’s undulating to some vintage blues.

Tassel twirling up a storm, whether she’s wearing a G-string or a kimono, she has toured widely across Europe and North American, and currently is based out of Montreal, Canada. Here she is at the 2012 Tease-O-Rama in San Francisco.

Gay Pride in Lisbon

Black Pigeon Speaks visits a gay pride event in Lisbon. Not half as flamboyant as Sydney. San Francisco or Vancouver, the event is much closer to what Black Pigeon Speaks saw in Tokyo. Is it because the public in Portugal is more circumspect or does the Catholic Church still have some influence across southern Europe?

A new shock poll. Young people are growing much less tolerant toward the LGBT community. Here are several studies that DESTROY the narrative that young voters are more liberal!! More from Dr. Steve Turley.

Sargon of Akkad says the reason for the resistance to the LGBT is simple. If you push anything too hard and in one direction, the pendulum will swing back the opposite direction. More on The Thinkery.

Love is Dwindling in Japan

The once explosive population of post-World War II Japan has made a shocking about-face. The Land of the Rising today owns the fastest negative population growth in the world. Japan is home to most people over the age of 65 and the least under the age of 15 than any country on the planet. The problem: Baby-making has come to a standstill! Instead, the Japanese have turned to other pleasures, such as cuddle cafes, host parties and sexual fetishes. Investigative journalist Ryan Duffy journeyed to Tokyo to dig out the details in this disturbing trend of this edition of “Vice.”
