The Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage was severe, with Amazon losing an estimated $72–75 million per hour in AWS revenue during the roughly four-hour disruption.
Preliminary estimates suggest global economic losses, including halted financial transactions and productivity, ranging from $5 billion to potentially hundreds of billions of dollars. So what caused this widespread outage? AWS attributed it to DNS resolution errors in its US-East-1 data center region, which knocked services offline for hours.
AWS has confirmed it was a technical failure. However, there is strong evidence to point the blame at China. Not only that, but China has even claimed responsibility after they say that the NSA hacked into their transportation systems on Sunday. Is there any truth to this?
