Go! Girl! Go! — Trece

She didn’t have a reputation whatsoever as a dancer, but before appearing on the TV sitcom Full House, Lori Loughlin burned some serious rubber turning wheelies atop a BMX bike at a school dance in the movie RAD. Jump in the Wayback Machine and you might remember the hallmarks of the 1980s — disco, big hair, fad dances and extreme sports. RAD, from 1986, combined all of those trends in the tale of a young daredevil Cru (played by Bill Allen) trying to beat the pros in a BMX race called the Helltrack. Here, Cru and his girlfriend Christian (Loughlin) show off their righteous moves to the Real Life tune “Send Me An Angel.”

Move Over, Saudi Arabia

The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world’s top oil producer as soon as the year 2017. That’s the latest forecast of the International Energy Agency, standing in sharp contrast to previous IEA reports that had projected Saudi Arabia remaining the leading oil producer through the year 2035.  Maria Van Der Hoeven, executive director of the IEA, discussed the new findings Monday in London with Reuters.

The One World Schoolhouse

Of all the institutions within our society, education has been perhaps the most resistant to change. By and large, public schools still model their curricula after guidelines established in 1892. Salman Khan, founder of the online Khan Academy, says radical reform is long overdue.

Originally conceived to help his 12-year-old cousin learn math, Khan Academy now offers free online lectures and video tutorials to more than 6 million students each month. Videos covering topics as diverse as mathematics, physics, history and economics have garnered more than 200 million views and generated significant funding from both the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Google.

Reason.TV’s Nick Gillespie sat down with Khan to discuss how to fundamentally transform American education, why technology is never the solution reformers expect and how massive amounts of money go missing every day in conventional public schools.

Looking for Love in China

In a strange paradox, the most successful class of women in China is having trouble landing mates, or even dates. This in a country where there’s a pronounced gender gap with 118 men for every 100 women. Conservative cultural norms are partly at the root of the problem. In China, if a woman is too independent, she can be ostracized. She’s also likely to be labeled “leftover” if she’s over 28.

It means that most successful women struggle to get a date and with a third of China’s millionaires now female, an increasing number of China’s women are prioritizing their work life. The result is “200 million singles in China and it keeps growing,” as Johnny Du, the CEO of one of China’s top internet dating sites, explains. Du says the women also set the bar too high. “Woman are really picky; they want the man to be very rich, young, handsome, educated.” SBS Australia and Journeyman Pictures report.

Flat Hatting

We usually turn a spotlight on newly released short films and animations, but every once in awhile, it’s fun to go back in time and resurrect a forgotten classic from the vaults. Flat Hatting falls in this category — a 1946 animated short created by John Hubley for the US Navy, designed to discourage pilots from too much aerial daredevilry, showboating or buzzing civilian targets. The acerbic humor hasn’t lost its edge, and the look  also is surprisingly modern, considering this was made more than 65 years ago.

Beginning in the 1930s, Hubley worked for the Disney studio — notably on “The Rite of Spring” segment from Fantasia. After quitting Disney and joining UPA (United Productions of America), he created the bemused character, Mr. Magoo, patterned after one of Hubley’s uncles.

Go! Girl! Go! — Doce

At the risk of offending his legions of fans, Elvis Presley was a mediocre actor. But his gyrating as The Pelvis drove the chicks crazy, and he could sing to beat the band — both talents that carried him to a long career in Hollywood, where he starred in 31 films. One of the best, at least one of the most fun, colorful and breezy, was 1964’s Viva Las Vegas pairing him with the hot Ann-Margret, who also knew how to shake a tail feather. Here, she shimmies and he sings “C’mon Everybody.”  Maybe it’s a simple formula for success, but it works.
