A SLAPP Against Free Speech

A trial taking place in North Dakota will have a significant impact on free speech, and could severely limit the power of protests.

The trial involves something called SLAPP, which strands for Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation. Energy Transfer, the Big Oil corporation behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, is seeking $300 million in damages from Greenpeace USA and Greenpeace International for their roles in organizing indigenous-led protests against the North Dakota oil pipeline.

Steven Donziger, an American attorney who has led legal fights against Big Oil, including Chevron, joins The Jimmy Dore Show to talk about the SLAPP case in North Dakota.

New Journalism Coming

The old-style journalism — from ABC to The New York Times — might be dying off. But investigative journalist Matt Taibbi is optimistic that a new style of journalism will emerge.

Here, Taibbi talks with Jimmy Dore about the death of traditional journalism, owing to its links with the receding Democratic Party. Journalists like Rachel Maddow or Anderson Cooper have shown they can’t be trusted.

But Taibbi says  ge remains hopeful that a replacement will come.  The only question: How long will it take to birth a new journalism — one people can actually trust and believe?

Trump Slaps Free Speech

Generally, we have applauded President Donald Trump, finding him much more honest and proficient than Joe Biden. But Trump is not quite the strong advocate of free speech that he claims to be. He is now threatening colleges and universities that allow pro=Palestinian protests to happen.

Trump doesn’t like these protests, nor do we, because they slam Israel. But as long as the protests abide by law, they should have the same rights as anyone to express their thoughts and opinions. Our Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution make this clear, and President Trump, of all people, should follow our Constitution. This is not something that can be dictated by Israel.

Here, with more thoughts, is free-speech advocate and journalist Matt Taibbi, appearing on the Jimmy Dore Show.

It’s Fun Being A Nasty Bitch!

Joy Reid holds the distinction: She was the nastiest and most racist bitch on television, that is, if you overlook Whoopi Goldberg. But Reid got paid millions for her role. So she’s not exactly crying in her bear that that MSNBC has lowered the boom on her head. Here’s more in a parody from Mr. Reagan.

You’re Next: Rachel Maddow!

MSNBC is preparing to fire Rachel Maddow after haven already axed her producers. Here’s more from Trish Regan.

They’re Dropping Like Flies!

Lester Holt joins Joy Reid on the unemployed list. The longtime host of the NBC signature program “Nightly News” is leaving his post, as Joy Reid and others learn their fates.

New video today of Joy Reid sobbing and claiming “my show had value”… Trish Regan would dispute that. She’s here with the latest media fallout.

Joy Reid: She’s Given The Hook!

For years, The ReidOut was nothing but an unhinged rant fest, demonizing Trump supporters, peddling lies, and dividing America. But viewers finally had enough.

MSNBC, desperate to save face, dumped her—not because of integrity, but because no one was watching.

Now, Reid is playing the victim, blaming racism instead of her own failure. Typical.

Meanwhile, Trump, who exposed these media frauds for years, is winning big. First Cuomo, then Lemon, and now Reid—The fake news empire is crumbling. Here’s more from Lionel Nation.

I told you Joy Reid would soon be fired as recently as three weeks ago — well, that day is now here.

MSNBC is about to undergo massive changes and Joy Reid won’t be the only host fired. Many more to come. I’ll explain. Here’s more from Trish Regan.

Brazilian Censorship Challenged

A Brazilian judge attempting bald-faced and blatant censorship is being targeted by President Donald Trump’s Truth Social as well as by Rumble. The judge, Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, has clashed repeatedly with former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as well as with the American social media platforms.

What makes this lawsuit special is that it’s been filed in the United States, so Moraes won’t be able to use any of his usual monkey business to squelch justice.

Here, Glenn Greenwald provides background on the case. Greenwald is an American journalist, but based in Brazil, where his reporting appears in the daily Folha de Sao Paulo.

Extreme Censorship In Germany

Why has the German government adopted such extreme laws governing free speech? What are the “hate crimes” they cite as a defense for these laws?

Is there a rationale behind the censorship? Or are there simply German leaders who can’t withstand criticism? Do they suffer from a deeply ingrained, even fascist, approach?

Here, journalist James Jackson explains Germany’s insane patchwork of law governing what’s free and acceptable speech.

Jackson is a Berlin-based freelance journalist covering news, politics and culture in central Europe. He has been published in Time Magazine, BBC Culture and The Sunday Times. He appears here on System Update with Glenn Greenwald.

George Be Gone At ABC!

Another one bites the dust! ABC’s top political analyst, George Stephanopoulos, is stepping down — sometime this summer.

Disney, which owns ABC News, should never have allowed Stephanopoulos to remain in office. He had served as senior advisor to former President Bill Clinton from 1993-96. In short, his prominence in the media business has stood out as a signal of gross political bias.

Meanwhile, what’s the deal with big media wanting to take over independents? Fox apparently wants part of the action and has targeted the company that sells the podcasts of former Fox News talents Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson and Bill O’Reilly. The company that sells their podcasts, Red Seat Ventures, was just acquired by the conservative network as it attempts to gain a foothold in the digital media space. Here’s more from Trish Regan.
