Why Even Bother?

Major League Baseball has belatedly opened its 2020 season but why even bother? The players are flashing their Black Lives Matter gear, playing politics instead of sports. The NBA and Women’s National Basketball Association have staged even more dramatic stunts. If athletes want to run for Congress, fine. Go for it. But when the games are on, they should be focusing on sports — not pushing their own brand of politics. More from Mark Dice.

Super Bowl Welfare

Sports stadiums receive billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, including the recent Oakland Raiders venue in Las Vegas, which pocketed $700 million, and Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which received $750 million.  Economists who study the tax subsidies say that little or none of the money make it back to taxpayers. Watch What You Say

June’s Nanny of the Month winner from Reason.TV, as well as the runners-up, are all politicians who want to clamp down on your freedom of speech. Some want to criminalize speech to combat bullying. Others are trying to curb trash-talking at sporting events. But the clearcut Nanny of the Month winner, New Mexico State Rep.  Mary Helen Garcia, has proposed punishing harsh speech directed at journalists, academics, celebrities, politicians, and the like, if the speech results in “substantial emotional distress.” Talk about an open-ended invitation to censorship.
