The Great Conjunction
The Great Conjunction was the star attraction in this year’s winter solstice, where the planets Saturn and Jupiter perfectly aligned with Earth. The event was regarded as widely significant in our culture in many aspects, with religious scholars relating the conjunction to the Star of Bethlehem, visible to observers during the birth of Christ.
Catastrophists worried that the gravitational influence would trigger a powerful solar flare, but the spectacular and rare event passed off into history, much to the delight of many stargazers. Although Saturn and Jupiter pass each other every 20 years, this year’s conjunction brought the planets within a tenth of a degree of each other, the closest in nearly four centuries and the most significant since the year 1226. Incredible Journey of Voyager 1
The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched on September 5, 1977, is the farthest man-made object from Earth at 13.5 billion miles. Among the highlights in its 42-year journey are the mind-blowing close-up photos of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, captured like never before, and magnificent shots of Saturn’s ringlets and two mysterious moons.
In 1990, at a distance of 4 billion miles, scientists pointed the Voyager cameras toward the sun and were rewarded with a “family portrait” of our solar system, capturing Planet Earth as a tiny blue speck in an array of light. In 2012, Voyager 1, which was built to last only five years, crossed the threshold of interstellar space, still collecting data despite being bombarded daily by dangerous cosmic rays. Astronauts from Earth land on the 13th moon of Jupiter and discover it inhabited by a bevy of nubile, men-hungry, young women in Fire Maidens of Outer Space. The women, it turns out, are transplants from the lost continent of Atlantis! This 1956 entry from Great Britain was but one of many B-grade sci-fi movies that conjured up Amazonian colonies existing beyond the Stratosphere.
