A SLAPP Against Free Speech
A trial taking place in North Dakota will have a significant impact on free speech, and could severely limit the power of protests.
The trial involves something called SLAPP, which strands for Strategic Lawsuits against Public Participation. Energy Transfer, the Big Oil corporation behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, is seeking $300 million in damages from Greenpeace USA and Greenpeace International for their roles in organizing indigenous-led protests against the North Dakota oil pipeline.
Steven Donziger, an American attorney who has led legal fights against Big Oil, including Chevron, joins The Jimmy Dore Show to talk about the SLAPP case in North Dakota.
Trump Slaps Free Speech
Generally, we have applauded President Donald Trump, finding him much more honest and proficient than Joe Biden. But Trump is not quite the strong advocate of free speech that he claims to be. He is now threatening colleges and universities that allow pro=Palestinian protests to happen.
Trump doesn’t like these protests, nor do we, because they slam Israel. But as long as the protests abide by law, they should have the same rights as anyone to express their thoughts and opinions. Our Bill of Rights and U.S. Constitution make this clear, and President Trump, of all people, should follow our Constitution. This is not something that can be dictated by Israel.
