The U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is weighing proposals that would close or tighten the so-called GRAS loophole. GRAS stands for Generally Recognized As Safe.
Manufacturers have been using a variety of dyes under the GRAS loophole, since 1958, without securing formal approval from the Food and Drug Administration, a unit within the Health and Human Services Department. “That loophole was hijacked by the industry and it was used to add thousands upon thousands of new ingredients into our food supply,” Kennedy says.
He wants to apply the brakes to the loopholes not only as a tool to make foods safer to eat, but also to help reduce obesity and other problems. Here’s more from M.J. Truth.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is moving to ban artificial food dyes in the United States by the end of 2026. All told, eight dyes will be phased out by the Food and Drug Administration. Kennedy labeled the dyes “poison.”
“For too long, some food producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent,” he said. It’s these petroleum-based dyes that are targeted for exclusion.
