Jamie Dlux resurrects a short 1972 documentary film called The Riot Makers that traces the history of civil disturbance.
It focuses on the Newark riots of the 1960s, getting into the tactics of agitators like Abbie Hoffman and H. Rap Brown, showing their adherence to the revolutionary principles of Vladimir Lenin. The film is based upon Eugene Methvin’s book The Riot Makers: The Technology of Social Demolition.
Obviously, times have changed somewhat. Rioters now get paid, for instance. Still, this 50-year-old film still resonates, making for a lively review given the violence of the past week.
