How To Control Surveillance

Ramiro Romani of TakeBackOurTech.org and AbovePhone.com joins us today to discuss technology: what it is, how it works, and how we can make it work for us. We discuss how governments and big tech corporations are collaborating to undermine our rights to privacy, free expression and even freedom of travel and how we can remove the Big Brother surveillance and controls from our devices. Who Owns Hunter’s Laptop?

Hunter Biden filed a federal court claim this week over a laptop filled with his personal information that was widely distributed, alleging that a computer repairman violated his privacy and took part in a conspiracy by helping others to invade his privacy.

Biden left the laptop with the repairman and never paid for the repairs, so presumably the laptop became the property of the repairman. But Biden claims the laptop is different from the data held within the laptop, and the repairman had no right to release the salacious material. The lawsuit charges “an egregious violation of Mr. Biden’s right of privacy.”

Here, Lionel Nation delves into this slippery case where court law has yet to fully catch up with rapidly changing technology. This is fairly new kind of case, but there have been similar instances that have been adjudicated in the past, so we can surmise where the Biden case might be headed.

Remember when Google was just a search engine? In the age of Gmail and Google Drive and Google Maps and GooTube and Google phones, it’s truly unsettling to think how much of the average person’s online activity is now directly feeding the Google data behemoth. Today on #SolutionsWatch, James Corbett talks to Rob Braxman (The Internet Privacy Guy) about how to de-Google, and why protecting your privacy online is so important. Privacy: Who Needs It?

American whistleblower Edward Snowden, who leaked highly classified information from the NSA and is now marooned in Russia, tries to convince John Stossel not to worry about privacy. “They’re trying to shape your behavior!” he warns. Stossel shot back with: “Americans by and large don’t care, and I mostly don’t care. I figure that teenage boy across the street could be picking up the stuff I send. The cork’s out of the bottle. What difference does it make?”

Snowden says Americans don’t care, because they don’t realize how the system and information is being used against them. He points out that we will feel pressured to “constrain our intellectual curiosity and, even frankly, our weirdnesses, because we could potentially someday be judged on the basis for it.” Tune in for more of this lively debate on the John Stossel channel.
